Chapter Six
Maxime
Dawn breaks after hours of terrible snow, wind, and sleet with my girlfriend wrapped in my arms.
No, my fiancée.
I roll the word around in my mouth, taste every syllable, the way each vowel rolls off my tongue. Fiancée. Fiancée. FIANCÉE. Putain, how strange it sounds. How strangely wonderful. How wonderfully strange. After weeks of worrying and planning and rehearsing over and over what I planned to say, I never used a single word of it. Not after I saw her staring at me in bed after she’d given me the actual warmth from her body. Not after she asked me through tears if I wanted to break up with her. I couldn’t wait until the perfect moment to propose.
There was no perfect moment. Not when all that mattered was proposing, period.
Christ, I could have lost her. How that puts things in perspective. Both of us could have died last night. By some miracle, we didn’t. I’m not going to waste any more time trying to make our relationship perfect. I’m just going to live it.
Laure needs physical affection to feel loved. I knew that, and I failed to give it to her. Failed because of my own misguided nervousness. During what should have been the most affectionate, exciting weeks of our lives, I instead pulled away in fear and anxiety. What gross stupidity.
Ethan was right. I really did need to get my head out of my ass and propose to my girlfriend.
I’ll always regret the pain I caused her. She’d better kick my ass if I ever do something similar again.
Laure’s left hand is sprawled across my chest, her legs tangled with mine. Her breath flutters in a steady rhythm against my neck. She’s so delightfully warm against me. Putain, I’m a fool. I gave up weeks of her naked body wrapped in mine, just because I was nervous about proposing to her.
I lift her hand from my chest, gazing down at the ring now glittering from her finger. Satisfaction flashes through me, my hard cock twitching in approval. This woman is officially mine now. Forever. Just as I’m hers.
I’ve always been hers, frankly, since the moment she came out of that bathroom stall, face red in embarrassment. My shock at seeing a woman had me standing there, dick in hand, gaping at the beautiful woman washing her hands, calm as you please, while I stood there in the most vulnerable position imaginable.
And then she glanced down, and I’ll never admit it in a million years, but I saw that flash of desire in her eyes. It’s a good thing she literally ran out of the bathroom, because a few seconds later I might have had her up against the wall.
Now I have a ring on her finger. It’s immensely satisfying.
And its symbolism didn’t escape her. A sapphire supported by two rubies. Just as I intend to support her. We must have stared at it for ages after I slipped it on her finger. It fit perfectly. I didn’t even need to verify she liked it.
